Shallow Seas

there is no stillness here

not even within

there are stings and bites

and fish that block

out the light

then the excitation

of dolphins at play

Laura loves it when a school of little fish swims near the surface in a dark circle, with bright light from the sun coming through the centre. Light plays with water in myriad ways.

Open Ocean

Clear Water

When the women leave the safety of the coastal waters, they discover the freedom of the open ocean. They take deep breaths so they can let go of their worries. Vast areas of water surround them.

As Laura strokes the shell, she realises that the open ocean covers over half the Earth. It is the second largest of the world’s habitats, after the deep sea.

However, it is low in nutrients. The water is clear but not nutritious. Therefore, it contains little life. It is the marine equivalent of desert.

Like a desert, the shell says, it contains oases, or spots where surface water is carried out from the coasts or where currents well up. These oases contain more nutrients, together with more life. This appeals to Laura, but the oases shift, carrying the life they feed with them. Like a shifty person, they are not dependable.
